Woman Detained for Smoking Inside Lavatory Onboard Indigo Flight

BENGALURU: Smoking onboard flights are considered a very strict offence when it comes to Indian aviation, and a 24 years old woman learnt this lesson the hard way after she was arrested by the police in Bengaluru.

The Indigo flight numbered 6E-716 is a late-night service that connects the cities of Kolkata and Bengaluru. It leaves Kolkata at 9:50 PM and reaches the destination Bengaluru three hours later. And the incident took place onboard this flight on the night of last Sunday.

24-year-old Priyanka Chakraborty who hails from the Sealdah District of the state of West Bengal was onboard this flight. After the flight took to the air, this woman went to the lavatory and was inside for some time. The flight crew suspected that she was smoking in the lavatory. Based on these hunches, they made her open the lavatory door and the cigarette was found in the garbage bin of the lavatory.

The incident had reportedly taken place sometime around midnight, which was about half an hour from the scheduled time of landing of the flight. As an immediate action, the flight crew poured water into the bin and the captain declared Priyanka Chakraborty as an “Unruly Passenger”.

The flight crew also handed her over to the security personnel at the Bengaluru airport once the plane landed there after midnight. Shankar K, the assistant manager of security for the Interglobe Aviation ltd at the Bangalore International Airport filed a complaint against her with the state police. Following this, the Karnataka Police arrested Priyanka Chakraborty on the charges of committing an act endangering the life or personal safety of others.

This incident comes to light after several incidents of failure to adhere to the strict protocols were reported from different parts of the country. While a politician with the ruling party allegedly tried to open a door while the plane was still in air, another man was accused of taking a leak on his co-passenger in a separate incident in the past few months.
